Getting the Most from These Resources
Practical implementation strategies from an educator with 34+ years of classroom experience.
Start with Visual Schedules
Post the daily visual schedule at eye level near the classroom entrance. Review it together at the start of each day to build predictability and reduce transition anxiety.
Use Movement Breaks Proactively
Schedule movement breaks before demanding academic tasks, not just as a response to dysregulation. 5-minute breaks every 20-30 minutes can significantly improve focus and on-task behavior.
Tiered Activities in Mixed Groups
When using tiered activities, avoid labeling tiers by difficulty level in front of students. Use neutral names like 'Team A, B, C' or color-code them to preserve student dignity.
Communication Boards for All Learners
Communication boards benefit all students — not just non-verbal learners. ELL students and students with word-retrieval difficulties often find picture-supported communication boards empowering.
